Beautiful Photos of Infrared Trees

by admin on Jun.19, 2010, under Amazing Share/Bookmark

Here is a a selection of beautiful infrared trees.
In infrared photography, the film or image sensor used is sensitive to infrared light. Because everyday objects reflect infrared in proportions that differ sharply from that of visible light, the tonal relationships are wildly unexpected. Such near-infrared techniques used in photography give subjects an exotic, antique look. Green vegetation becomes white, whereas human skin becomes pale and ghostly.

How do I get a copy of these files so i can print some and out them on my wall?

These photos are amazing. Are there any higher resolution ones available to download as wallpapers?

  • CTarb

Yeah, where’s the “give money for high res downloads” link? This tech is blowing me away.

I don’t think the text is accurate. It says warm things are white, but people and animals show up dark. Horses are VERY warm. Clouds? Not warm. The cool things must show up white.

I think the compositions are very nice. One question (or two as the case may be) isn’t infrared film, a black and white film…was the color added to these prints digitally?

No doubt…awesome pictures. Is it possible to get larger files of these? I’d be into having them on my computer.

@Liz: The text is accurate. “Because everyday objects reflect infrared in proportions that differ sharply from that of visible light, …” So, since the horses are black, they don’t reflect any light, neither infrared. Clouds are white, hence reflect (almost) all light, also infrared. Infrared film just shows us the reflections we cannot see. The horses must be warm, soaking up all that infrared light. It’s just a different way to look at things.

I love the effects you have created. I too do infradred photography and am wondering how you processed the files to get such beautiful results. I use Photoshop 4 and have not figured out how to do what you do. Could you give me some hints? Thanks

@Liz — good observation, but this is not thermal imaging. The light you see in these photos is “near-infrared” that is mainly being reflected, as opposed to radiating, off the subjects. Near-infrared is just light of a wavelength that is slightly outside the range of the human eye. Search on wikipedia for more info. It’s quite interesting.
